Rockwell Automation Achieves Industry Benchmark with IEC 62443-4-2 Cybersecurity Certification for Variable Frequency Drives

New certification recognizes Rockwell’s PowerFlex 755T-series and PowerFlex 6000T VFDs for adherence to the stringent IEC 62443-4-2 cybersecurity standards’ guidelines.

Rockwell Automation, Inc., one of the world’s largest companies dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, announced it has been recognized for achieving the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62443-4-2 Security Level Capability 1 certification from TÜV Rheinland, an independent and globally respected certification body. This certification recognizes the Allen‑Bradley PowerFlex 755T-series and PowerFlex 6000T drives for adherence to the stringent cybersecurity standards outlined in the IEC 62443-4-2 guidelines.

The IEC 62443-4-2 standard is part of the ISA/IEC 62443 series of standards, which focus on the security for industrial automation and control systems. Achieving this certification for drive families demonstrates the robustness against cyber threats and their capability to help protect industrial systems from unauthorized access and potential cyberattacks.

The certification process involved a rigorous evaluation of the drives’ design and development lifecycle, verifying that cybersecurity was integrated at every stage. This comprehensive approach to security includes threat modeling, secure coding practices, and security-focused testing to help identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities.

“The PowerFlex 755T-series of low voltage drives and 6000T medium voltage drives are designed to help meet the needs of modern industrial environments, which are increasingly interconnected and require advanced protection against cyber threats,” said Manju Venugopal, product security leader, Rockwell Automation.

Providing comprehensive cybersecurity service, Rockwell Automation has achieved numerous milestones in recent years in cybersecurity including:

  • Reaching Maturity Level 4 of the globally recognized IEC 62443-4-1 industrial cybersecurity certification, the highest level, for its secure development lifecycle—independently certified by TÜV Rheinland
  • Introducing the world’s first programmable automation controller to be certified compliant with the IEC 62443-4-2 security standard by TÜV Rheinland
  • Introducing ODVA CIP Security capable systems for the plant floor
  • Becoming a founding member of the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance
  • Achieving IEC 62443-3-3 Process Certification by TÜV Rheinland
  • Achieving ISO 27001 Certification for remote support through the Standards Institute of Israel
