Easier approval process with regulatory bodies

ABB medium voltage (MV) circuit breakers and enclosures recently received cUL certification from the standards organization, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, providing additional assurance that these products are tailored to the stringent requirements of the Canadian market. This certification also validates their reliability and performance under exacting conditions, streamlines approval processes with regulators and facilitates installation and commissioning.

“The certification process demands comprehensive documentation, and a considerable amount of time spent both in the office and at the factory,” said Danish Baig, Product Marketing Specialist at ABB Electrification Canada. “This resource-intensive activity not only guarantees that our product complies with the safety and technical standards established by Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, but it also helps reduce risks on the project site. As a result, site inspections are more efficient, and obtaining approvals from Canadian regulatory authorities becomes a smoother process,” he added.

Used for protection and controlling applications in industrial facilities and installations, these medium voltage devices were already certified to IEC and ANSI/UL safety standards, but the cUL certification adds an additional certification, specific to Canada. Less documentation needed for inspectors, and less time spent dialoguing over what is required to pass inspection reduces potential delays and other complications, thereby lowering overall project risk and safeguarding schedules and budgets.

“Utilities recognize cUL certification because it means enhanced safety and compliance,” said Alessandro Capito, National Sales Manager, Electrification Distribution Solutions for ABB Canada. “This is why it was so important for us to obtain this certification—it increases our market access for MV breakers and enclosures. And it also widens procurement options and breaker choices for industrial facilities and commercial projects across the country.”

“The benefits for our customers, such as reduced risk of inspection failures, and enhanced safety, were central to achieving this certification: This approach ensures that all administrative matters are handled from the outset,” Capito stated. “Our main objective is to simplify the process of working with ABB and this certification brings us closer to that vision,” Capito added.
