Motor disconnects are more than simple on-off devices to satisfy lockout-tagout requirements. They have become an integral part of the motor control circuit as disconnects increasingly offer control functions, such as auxiliary contact interface, added selector switches and push buttons.

There are several types of DC motors, including shunt, series, compound wound or stabilized shunt, permanent magnet, and brushless DC. The main differences between these types of motors revolve around how the electromagnetic fields are generated. For example, in a permanent magnet motor, the magnetic field in the stator is supplied by permanent magnets positioned just inside the frame of the motor.

Many engineering advancements provide small incremental gains of efficiency, cost, and functionality.  However, some engineering milestones provide giant leaps of improvement.  Once commercialized, these are “game changer products” that can help redefine entire industries.  Centrifugal turbo compressors and blowers are one such development.  They offer double digit efficiency gains compared to positive displacement and multistage centrifugal compressors.

A new case study from Mohawk College’s Energy & Power Innovation Centre is showcasing how an innovative technology for monitoring motor health can help identify motor-rotor unbalance, misalignment, electrical unbalance, and early stage bearing faults.

Dave HinderWhat if customizing your factory automation could be as easy as downloading an app? That’s the reality Bosch Rexroth seeks to provide with the ctrlX AUTOMATION system. Dubbed the ‘smartphone of automation’, the ctrlX AUTOMATION system seeks to make automation more user friendly, and give more control to smaller manufacturing companies who may not be able to develop their own specialized applications while using standard control systems.

In a world of low commodity prices and reduced demand, oil and gas producers are looking for solutions that lower cost while increasing project certainty. Scovan Engineering’s design philosophy is providing answers to this challenge. Scovan’s uses an efficient and effective approach from design through to execution, by modularizing the installation to the maximum amount that is practical.

I remember when servo presses exploded onto the automotive marketplace more than a decade ago. The advent of the servo-driven press overlapped with the need to improve capital efficiency, manufacturing flexibility and quality to meet the requirements of newer multi-model, multi-platform vehicle production facilities – and the associated demands placed on Tier suppliers.

Sensing technology has a major presence in manufacturing machinery. It provides the foundation for maintaining consistent quality and detecting any lapses in machine performance. If subtle changes in the physical properties of a machine can cause it to fail, then the sensors responsible for detecting those changes can save manufacturers lengthy downtime and repair costs.

Voltage StabilizationIn this article, we will discuss a KEB drive feature called Voltage Stabilization. This post is part of a series that highlights different KEB drive features and how they can be utilized to optimize motor performance.

The variable frequency drive (VFD) cable business has become a very large market for cable manufactures in the last 20 years. In the past, standard AC motors had the complexity of a squirrel cage motor – just get power and it would run. The first silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) was developed by Bell Labs/GE in 1958 to vary the speed of DC electric motors used in various applications. Since then there have been motor speed control technology evolving from large-scale integration (LSI), gate turn-off thyristor (GTO), pulse-width modulation (PWM), insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), and space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM). These new forms of power conversion to support speed control in VFD motors has caused the demand on the cables to change as well, which has led to many new cable options.
