Motor control is one of the most important directions being taken to ensure efficiency, longevity of motor operation and to ensure downtime is minimized. And one of the most notable directions in this field is the growing demand for micro drives. As size is a common concern for those using drive technology micro drives can offer an optimal solution.

Ontario-based Enertics Inc. recently partnered with Mohawk College's Energy and Power Innovation Centre (EPIC) to complete third-party testing and validation of its LVMM 100 Motor Health Monitor Sensor Gateway, a new predictive maintenance tool for monitoring electric motors.

Rockwell Automation, Inc. recently announced the next evolution of its global Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Partner Program. The enhanced offering now provides increased market access opportunities, simplification, and standardized product alignment for manufacturers, enabling participants to fully leverage Rockwell Automation technology.

The Danish company, Munck Group, has taken on an icy mission where equipment will be running 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. “I have the best office view in the world,” says Rasmus Schmidt-Petersen. "I can watch the sun rise and set over the icebergs every day.” He has just spent a week in Ilulissat, a naturally scenic village of 4500 residents on Greenland's west coast.

2020 is a year of anniversaries for Beckhoff. Founded 40 years ago, the company started out with PC-based controllers in 1985 and launched its bus terminals in 1995. Ronald Heinze, editor-in-chief of Open Automation, talked with managing director and founder Hans Beckhoff about the company’s many innovations. “We view the current economic situation as acceptably positive,” said Hans Beckhoff.

Mechanical power transmission equipment — including motors, drives, shafts, gearing and other associated components — relies on bearings to keep drive trains aligned for a smooth transmission of power. But there are many considerations that require attention when it comes to these vital parts.

When it comes to making an investment in motor control equipment the benefits of ease and speed of integration, serviceability and safety are at the top of your list. Reducing the costs of a solution and the effort and time spent integrating the equipment can greatly affect the outcome of a project. And, why not optimize performance and make maintaining the equipment easier and safer, too?

For manufacturers seeking to improve system design, promote easy integration and enable rapid diagnostics of equipment issues, it helps to have a safety solution that supports a variety of networking options and minimizes hardware requirements. Omron's new Stand-Alone Safety Kits are uniquely designed to do just that.

The variable frequency drive (VFD) cable business has become a very large market for cable manufactures in the last 20 years. In the past, standard AC motors had the complexity of a squirrel cage motor – just get power and it would run. The first silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) was developed by Bell Labs/GE in 1958 to vary the speed of DC electric motors used in various applications. Since then there have been motor speed control technology evolving from large-scale integration (LSI), gate turn-off thyristor (GTO), pulse-width modulation (PWM), insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), and space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM). These new forms of power conversion to support speed control in VFD motors has caused the demand on the cables to change as well, which has led to many new cable options.
