Trash compactors are one way that we can improve the environment by reducing the volume of trash that goes into a landfill.  Smaller bags, smaller loads means that dumpsters can hold more trash and smaller loads entering the landfill. This also yields fewer times the dumpster needs to be emptied which equals less use of fuel to dump the load.

A pressure switch is needed to monitor the amount of hydraulic pressure in the compactor’s system. As the compactor compresses the material, pressure is placed on the system. A pressure switch monitors the system pressure and turns off the hydraulic pump when pressure is not needed and turns it on when there is a demand for more pressure.

But, compacting large amounts of trash is quite a challenging task. The materials that need to be compacted vary from strong to weak. The hydraulics in the compactor sometimes push very hard to crush the contents and other times push more gently. When a piece of trash is being compacted and gives way, spikes can occur in the hydraulic system. 

Application Challenge:

Finding a rugged pressure switch that can provide an accurate signal when used heavily in an aggressive environment and withstand potential spikes. The pressure switch can see some high spikes during use. This causes immediate and high pressure in the system and can damage weak pressure switches. Some compactors are also cleaned via a power washer. 

The pressure switch required will need to be able to handle the strong water pressure and water spray to survive. Shock, vibration, and heat are also present very frequently.

Application Solution:

The redesigned PS61 Series Pressure Switch has been extensively tested to withstand up to 7,000 psi (483 bar) of pressure without incurring any type of damage. This is critical in trash compacting applications.  Also, MIL-STD 202G testing for vibration and shock has been achieved. The electrical connection back-ends have been designed and tested to IPX7, IPX9K, and IP6KX so that they are resistant to dust, high-pressure/high-temperature wash-down, as well as submergence.

The PS61 Series Pressure Switches have been designed and tested to survive for over 2,000,000 cycles so that the owner can be assured that their equipment will have a long life.

DCS Lafert Formally Introduces New Plant in San Dona di Piave 1 400x275

The new production plant is officially in operation after its formal unveiling at Lafert’s 60th anniversity celebrations in San Donà di Piave, Italy, close to the historic headquarters. 

The 130 000 sq foot plant was developed to increase production capacity and meet the growing demand for IE5 Super Premium Efficiency motors, while also providing new storage areas for raw materials and finished products. In this plant alone, Lafert is able to produce up to 1400 pieces per day and can ship 4-5 international containers per week thanks to the internal customs area. 

The project began in September 2020 with the aim of building a brand-new manufacturing plant to produce high efficiency permanent magnet motors, specifically intended for pumping applications. The plant was designed and built with extensive automated production capabilities including fully automated production lines. Today the plant employs 50 operators who have been carefully trained to work in synergy with the production lines. The plant delivers maximum comfort in the working conditions of the operators in terms of light, space, services, and other factors that affect the well-being of employees.

DCS New LUTZE DRIVEFLEX and MOTIONFLEX VFD Cables from Automation Direct 1 400x275

AutomationDirect has added new LUTZE DRIVEFLEX® and MOTIONFLEX® variable frequency drive cables which provide supreme protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI).

These cables are available in 18 to 8 AWG sizes and include four black conductors with a green/yellow ground conductor of the same gauge. Each conductor is labeled for easy identification and is covered in a cross-linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation (type XHHW-2) that is oil and sun resistant, suitable for dry, damp, or wet locations, and approved for direct burial.
